Enneagram Types in Dating App Bios: Why Everyone's Adding Theirs

Enneagram personality type thumbnail

Lately, dating app profiles have been full of MBTI types — and increasingly, Enneagram numbers too.

I figured it was just a passing fad at first, but the deeper I looked, the more real data and stories I found behind it, so today I want to lay it all out.

<Psych2Go: what is the Enneagram test?>

✦ The nine types at a glance

One line each, so you can skim

1 Reformer  ·  2 Helper  ·  3 Achiever
4 Individualist  ·  5 Investigator  ·  6 Loyalist
7 Enthusiast  ·  8 Challenger  ·  9 Peacemaker

The word Enneagram is usually explained as coming from the Greek 'ennea' (nine) and 'gramma' (a figure or something drawn) — a shape made of nine connected points, used to sort personality into nine types.

From Type 1 the Reformer to Type 9 the Peacemaker, each carries its own core motivation and fear. Rather than just listing what kind of person you are, it tries to explain why you act the way you do — that's what sets it apart from MBTI.

There's also a 'wing' concept, where traits from an adjacent type blend in. A Type 4 with a 3-wing and a Type 4 with a 5-wing can look pretty different from each other.

Here's a real example. The single most-used prompt on Bumble profiles worldwide is "The quickest way to my heart is."

In the end, people want to tell you how they'd like to be treated before anything else, and the Enneagram compresses that into just a few words.

TikTok keeps churning out videos analyzing compatibility between specific types — the kind that explores what happens when a Type 4 dates a Type 7 pulls in a serious amount of views.

The comments range from "this is literally me" to "this is my ex, I'm shook," which tells you a lot of people are mapping their own experience onto it.

This isn't happening by accident. Millennials and Gen Z increasingly want to know how someone communicates and processes emotion before they care about looks or résumé lines.

Therapy-speak has drifted naturally into everyday conversation and social media memes, so bringing up a personality type doesn't feel out of place anymore.

Still, there's pushback. One therapist wrote a blog post titled "What Got Lost When the Enneagram Got Instagrammed".

Her argument: a tool meant for deep self-reflection is now being flattened into short captions and memes, losing its original context along the way.

✦ How reliable are celebrity types?

None of them took the test themselves

Elon Musk
Type 8 — Challenger
Taylor Swift
Type 3 — Achiever
Morgan Freeman
Type 9 — Peacemaker

Plenty of people have tried mapping public figures onto the system too. Elon Musk is often typed as a bold, challenging Type 8, and Taylor Swift as an achievement-driven Type 3, with Morgan Freeman showing up frequently as a harmony-seeking Type 9.

None of them have taken the test themselves, though — these are all guesses based on interviews and public behavior, so it's best to take them as fun reference points, nothing more.

✦ The numbers behind it

Based on roughly 200,000 responses

Type 9 — 16.5% (most common)
Type 6 — 13.8% (close second)
Type 5 — 4.6% (rarest)

Let's look at the numbers. One Enneagram testing site's tally of roughly 200,000 responses collected through April 2026 found Type 9 the Peacemaker most common at 16.5%, with Type 6 the Loyalist a close second at 13.8% and Type 7 the Enthusiast third at 13.6%.

The rarest type was Type 5 the Investigator at just 4.6%, followed by Type 8 the Challenger at 6.3%.

Split by gender, Type 1 skewed male — 14% of men versus 9% of women — while Type 4 skewed female, 15% of women versus 9% of men.

Granted, this is a self-selected sample of people who chose to take an online test, so it's not a perfect stand-in for the general population. But at 200,000 responses, it's large enough to point to a real pattern.

Either way, even the most common type doesn't crack 20% — which suggests the nine types are spread out fairly evenly rather than one type dominating.

The trend doesn't stay confined to dating apps. Pathway Vet Alliance, a U.S. veterinary hospital chain, brought the Enneagram into its leadership team-building.

Its CFO put it plainly: "The Enneagram has been — and continues to be — a great tool for us to coalesce as a team. It has helped us recognize how our different types and styles are actually really powerful when we remember to harness the different energies."

One creative agency mapped its team by type — a Type 2 managing director, a Type 6 assistant, a Type 5 IT lead, a Type 9 salesperson, and a Type 6 events coordinator — and used that breakdown to trace exactly where friction inside the team was coming from.

By the way, you made it all the way to the end of this one. I bet you're genuinely curious about the Enneagram, aren't you?♡

Let's keep digging into each type together going forward.

Well then, shall we begin today's adventure?
