PSYREN got its anime announcement about 15 years after serialization ended. That so many fans waited this long is proof of its popularity.
In AnimeJapan's fan-vote ranking "Manga We Want to See Animated," it placed 6th in 2018 and 10th in 2024.
Making the ranking long after it ended means fans kept wanting an anime.
Its volumes are also said to have appeared on Japanese manga sales charts several times during serialization.
It has fans overseas too. The US publisher VIZ Media released all 16 volumes in English from 2011 to 2014.
The Western outlet Collider put it at the top of its underrated manga list, praising its striking visuals and compelling storytelling.

Their relationship and feelings are portrayed as one of the story's central pillars.
Hiryu Asaga becomes a comrade who fights alongside Ageha.
Oboro Mochizuki, a popular entertainer, and Kabuto Kirisaki, who loves money and women, join the same team too.
In this post, we'll look at the MBTI of three of them: Ageha, Sakurako, and Hiryu.
First, something to keep in mind.
These MBTI types are fan-community vote results, not official settings.
With so few votes, it's best read as a fun reference, not a definitive answer.
◆ The three leads: MBTI and voice actors
Fan-vote based, not official
| ESFP Ageha Yoshina Rikuya Yasuda | INFJ Sakurako Amamiya Mayuko Kazama | ISFP Hiryu Asaga Shunsuke Takeuchi |
Ageha Yoshina: ESFP
On PDX (Personality Index), Ageha is listed as ESFP, the so-called Entertainer type.
ESFP is known as an action-first type that reacts with the body to whatever is in front of it.
Ageha overlaps with it in two ways.
One is that he charges into other people's trouble without hesitation, and the other is that he improvises new techniques even in the middle of a fight.
He is the type who finds answers inside the situation rather than planning ahead.
Sakurako Amamiya: INFJ
On PDX, Sakurako is listed as INFJ, the Advocate type.
INFJ is known as a type that speaks little, has a deep inner world, and pours its heart into a few people for a long time.
Sakurako's quiet, introverted side and deep inner world, and her strong attachment to Ageha, overlap with this type.
Sakurako also has another, aggressive personality called Abyss, so it makes sense to place her as an INFJ, whose inside and outside differ so much.
Hiryu Asaga: ISFP
On PDX, Hiryu is listed as ISFP, the Adventurer type.
ISFP is known as a quiet action-taker who shows feelings through deeds rather than words.
Hiryu is known by the nickname Dragon.
His quiet, action-first side and strong will to protect his friends overlap with this type.
Looking at the three together
◆ Comparing the four letters
Where the three match and differ
Energy
Ageha Extrovert (E) Sakurako Introvert (I) Hiryu Introvert (I)
Information
Ageha Sensing (S) Sakurako Intuition (N) Hiryu Sensing (S)
Decisions
Ageha Feeling (F) Sakurako Feeling (F) Hiryu Feeling (F)
Lifestyle
Ageha Perceiving (P) Sakurako Judging (J) Hiryu Perceiving (P)
Ageha is extroverted and Sakurako introverted, so even one letter shows the difference in temperature between childhood friends.
If Ageha is the one who collides first, Sakurako is the one who keeps things in her heart for a long time.
Ageha and Hiryu both have Sensing (S) and Perceiving (P), making them types that react on the spot, while only Sakurako, an INFJ, leans toward Intuition and Judging.
Ageha is voiced by Rikuya Yasuda, Sakurako by Mayuko Kazama, and Hiryu by Shunsuke Takeuchi.
It will be worth watching how they turn out.
The story that begins with the red phone card has only just raised its curtain.
Well then, shall we begin today's adventure?
