Anime Villains' MBTI Types, According to Fans: From Sukuna to Light

Today we look at the MBTI types of seven anime villains. They are Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen, Muzan from Demon Slayer, Aizen from Bleach, Madara from Naruto, Frieza from Dragon Ball, Meruem from Hunter x Hunter and Light from Death Note.

First, something to know. The MBTI of an anime character is not official canon. No creator or studio has endorsed a single type. Every one of them is a fan interpretation.

Light is the protagonist of Death Note, but he is counted as a villain because he kills people with the notebook. That is why he is included.

◆ Seven Villains, the Types Fans Pick Most

All of these are fan interpretations, not canon.

Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen) — ENTJ (minority view: ESTP)

Muzan (Demon Slayer) — ENTJ

Frieza (Dragon Ball) — ENTJ

Aizen (Bleach) — INTJ (minority views: ENTJ, INFJ)

Meruem (Hunter x Hunter) — INTJ (minority view: INFJ)

Madara (Naruto) — split between ENTJ and INTJ

Light (Death Note) — ENTJ draws the most votes, INTJ is argued too

1. What the Evidence Is Based On

The MBTI types fans offer rest on two kinds of evidence. One is voting. On sites such as Personality Database and Personality Index, people cast votes and the result is the type.

The other is a writer's opinion. A journalist or columnist, at CBR for example, analyzes the character and picks a type.

The two are different in nature, so I will not blend them into one majority. When I say a type is "often picked by fans," I will say which kind of evidence stands behind it.

◆ Commander vs. Architect

In common: both set a goal, plan for it and push it through.

2. Most of the Seven Gather in Two Types

To say it up front, most of the seven are ENTJ or INTJ. CBR calls ENTJ the commander and INTJ the architect.

Both types set a goal, make a plan and push it through. They suit a villain's role, which may be why so many gather there.

The difference is where the energy goes. An ENTJ steps to the front and moves people, while an INTJ stays in the back and draws up the plan. Because of this, fans sometimes split over a single character.

3. Villains Often Picked as ENTJ

Fans often pick Sukuna as ENTJ. The voting site Personality Index lists him as ENTJ, and other analysis pieces also read him that way.

As a minority view, one site types him as ESTP.

Muzan leans ENTJ. ENTJ draws the most opinions on Personality Database, and CBR's analysis says ENTJ too. CBR cites his skill at strategic planning.

Here it is one voting site plus a few writers' opinions, so I will not say how many sources agree.

Frieza is also picked as ENTJ. CBR's analysis and getpersonality both say ENTJ. Both are writers' opinions, so those two alone cannot be called a majority.

On Personality Database, a voting site, ENTJ also draws the most opinions.

4. Villains Often Picked as INTJ

Aizen leans INTJ. On Personality Index, INTJ takes first place with 339 votes, and second-place ENTJ has 121.

CBR's analysis says INTJ as well. An older analysis once read him as ENTJ.

◆ Meruem in Two Stages

Step 1 — before Komugi: INTJ

Step 2 — after meeting Komugi: INFJ (CBR's reading)

Meruem is often picked as INTJ by voters. The Ranker vote on Hunter x Hunter characters' MBTI says INTJ too.

CBR, however, typed him as INFJ. The reason lies in his change after meeting Komugi.

The idea is that his search for connection and his hold on his own values look closer to INFJ. It reads the early Meruem as INTJ and the changed Meruem as INFJ.

◆ Two Camps, Two Characters

5. Two Villains Fans Cannot Settle

Madara is split between ENTJ and INTJ. The ENTJ side includes Sportskeeda, fan forums and getpersonality. The INTJ side is CBR.

CBR points to how he saw the world as a giant chessboard and moved the nations of the ninja world like pieces.

It feels as if ENTJ has a little more support, but neither side can be called settled.

Light is the other famous case of the same argument. ENTJ draws the most votes on Personality Database, but analyses for INTJ are common too, and even CBR's articles differ.

One article typed him INTJ because he did not chase credit and preferred to work alone.

Whether to see him as an extroverted commander or an introverted strategist is a debate even among fans.

◆ Minority Views

6. To Sum Up

Let me go over the seven again. Sukuna, Muzan and Frieza are often picked as ENTJ. Aizen and Meruem lean INTJ. Madara is split between ENTJ and INTJ, and Light draws the most votes as ENTJ while INTJ is argued too.

The minority views are ESTP for Sukuna, ENTJ and INFJ for Aizen, and INFJ for Meruem.

That most of the seven gather around commander and strategist types is probably no accident. Planning for a goal and moving people and the board is what a villain does.

Still, these are fan interpretations, and MBTI is a personality reading to enjoy for fun. It is not an absolute standard that defines a character.
