Makoto and Noa: MBTI of the Goddess with Zero Believers

Goddess Noa reaching out her hand toward a calm-faced Makoto

Spoiler warning: this post includes spoilers up to anime episodes 1 and 2. Be careful!

The classmates transported to another world all got cheat abilities and even got scouted by various countries, but only Makoto Takatsuki is a 'Mage Apprentice.'

He started out like a character picked by mistake, but Makoto doesn't quit the game just because his stats are low. And what appears before him is Noa, a goddess with zero believers.

That the one who needs someone to believe in her is actually a god is a strange start. Why did Makoto decide to believe in this goddess? Put Makoto's INTP 5w6 traits side by side with Noa's ENFP 2w3 traits, and you can see where the two mesh.

Makoto INTP 5w6: A Gamer Who Analyzes from His Weak Stats

✦ The Difference After Arriving in the Other World

Makoto and the other students

The other students
• Receive powerful abilities
• Get recruitment offers from several countries
Makoto
• Left with no standout skills as a Mage Apprentice
• Keeps training anyway

After the whole class is transported to another world, Makoto finds out his stats are terrible. The other students receive powerful abilities and get recruitment offers from several countries, but Makoto is left behind with no standout skills.

Makoto's reaction here isn't to blame others or wait for things to get better. He keeps training in his weak state and adds the things he can do, one by one.

✦ The Two Types at a Glance

This post's reading

MBTIMakoto INTP, Noa ENFP
EnneagramMakoto 5w6, Noa 2w3
MakotoKeeps training instead of blaming his low stats; checks gear and skills, then finds strategies that fit his weak techniques
NoaPersuades believers directly instead of asserting authority; actively seeks a relationship with someone who will believe in her

This attitude is the starting point for reading Makoto as INTP 5w6. An INTP is closer to someone who, rather than accepting the problem in front of him as having a fixed answer, grasps how it works and looks for other solutions.

The traits of Enneagram 5w6 overlap too. Instead of jumping in unprepared, he checks the information and resources he has and thinks of ways to lower the risk.

Makoto's strength isn't that he got a strong ability from the start, but that he works out what options remain even with a weak ability.

✦ What Makoto Did in Episode 2

His first adventure in Makalen

✔ Where he arrived: Makalen, the city of water
✔ First thing he did: Registered as an adventurer
✔ Where he went: The Fujiwara Trading Company, run by his old gaming friend Fujiyan
✔ What he checked: Had the dagger from Noa appraised with Fujiyan's appraisal skill
✔ Who he hunted: A horned rabbit and goblins

That tendency shows up even better in episode 2. Makoto arrives in Makalen, the city of water, registers as an adventurer first, and visits the Fujiwara Trading Company run by Fujiyan, his old gaming friend.

He has the dagger he got from Noa appraised with Fujiyan's appraisal skill, and afterward takes an adventurer quest and fights a horned rabbit and goblins. What matters is that Makoto doesn't instantly go on a rampage just because he got one dagger.

Admitting the limits of his own ability, he examines his gear and skills and works out how to win with weak techniques.

To a Makoto like this, the other world isn't only a place of despair; it looks like a high-difficulty game. You shouldn't give up because it's hard; you just find the rules and the strategy.

Of course, that doesn't mean he's a reckless type who takes danger lightly. At least early on, Makoto is closer to someone who looks over the conditions he's given and advances one step at a time while reducing the chance of failure.

Also, since Makoto isn't a hero who solves everything alone but a gamer who figures out whose skills can be used where and combines people and tools, the INTP 5w6 reading becomes more convincing.

Noa ENFP 2w3: A Goddess Who Reaches Out First, Needing Believers

Noa seems to stand on the opposite side from Makoto. Thinking only of the status of a god, you'd expect her to be worshipped by people and to give orders.

But Noa is a minor goddess with not a single believer, and when she meets Makoto, she actively persuades him to become her believer first. It's a situation where she can only move if someone chooses her.

✦ Noa's Situation

A goddess with zero believers

Status
A minor goddess without a single believer
Situation
Sealed in a sea temple and unable to use her power properly
Action
Persuades Makoto to become her believer first
Official introduction
It is stated that Noa has hidden circumstances

This is also why I interpret Noa as ENFP 2w3. In this scene, rather than overwhelming the other person with authority or distance, Noa talks directly to the person in front of her, reveals her own need, and tries to build a relationship.

The core of Enneagram 2w3 is the wish to become someone others need and to be recognized within relationships. Noa's situation shows this wish even more desperately.

Since no one will believe her on the name of goddess alone, she has to approach someone directly and find her first believer.

The first believer Noa wants is, on one hand, one more number to add to a statistics table, but at the same time, a person who will accept her existence.

If she could have solved her problem with the authority of the divine realm alone, there'd have been no reason to ask Makoto directly. But instead of hiding the weakness that she has no believers, Noa reveals that very lack and asks to be chosen.

In that honesty there are both confidence and impatience. Since someone has to speak first to start a relationship, Noa's eagerness is different from mere talkativeness.

Still, it won't do to see Noa only as a kind helper who moves solely for Makoto. From the official introduction, it's stated that Noa has "hidden circumstances," and the goal Makoto takes on is also to rescue Noa.

Noa has her own reason why she absolutely needs Makoto. Her invitation isn't made of warm closeness alone; it's also a proposal to Win-Win with each other.

Their Contract Starts in Faith and Becomes a Strategy Guide

✦ What Each Needed from the Other

From faith to strategy

StartMakoto: a low-stat Mage Apprentice / Noa: a minor goddess with zero believers
NeededMakoto: a goal beyond his own limits / Noa: someone who will believe in and help her
GainedMakoto: a concrete goal of rescuing Noa / Noa: her first believer

Looking at the relationship between Makoto and Noa makes you see the word 'believe' a bit differently. Makoto didn't believe in Noa because she's the strongest goddess in the world. If anything, Noa has no believers, and Makoto has low stats.

They seem to lack the conditions to choose each other, which is why the two have to find in the other a possibility they don't have themselves.

Noa, sealed in a sea temple and unable to use her power properly, hands over a dagger, a divine item, instead of a blessing, and Makoto becomes Noa's first believer and gains the goal of rescuing her.

But the next step is still something Makoto has to do himself. Looking at the process in episode 2 of appraising the dagger, registering as an adventurer, and finding ways to hunt with weak skills, faith isn't an all-powerful cheat code.

Makoto's trusting Noa is closer to judging that it's worth moving together than to accepting her words without verification.

That's why he appraises whether the dagger from the goddess is real, and takes the next steps with his own hands through registering as an adventurer and hunting.

This relationship is interesting. Makoto needed a goal that goes beyond the limits of his own ability, and Noa needed someone who would believe in her and help.

So their contract is neither blind faith built on emotion alone nor a cold deal that only counts gains and losses. It's closer to a choice of admitting what each lacks and betting on the possibility the other holds.

The two who look unremarkable to others choosing each other and moving on to the next step together, that's the charm of this pairing.

That's all for this post. See you next time.
