These four aren't tangled up because they lack feelings. If anything, they start treating each other more awkwardly once feelings appear.

Koyuki doesn't want to break the comfortable relationship they have now, and Miki can't answer an old friend's confession with the same feelings.

Minato wants to get closer to Koyuki but can't clearly draw a line with Momoka, and Yota, even after being rejected, tries to act as usual so Miki won't feel uncomfortable.

The fun of The Ramparts of Ice is that the reason each of the four hides their heart is different.

✦ The Four Leads' MBTI Readings

Based on fan community classifications

INFPKoyuki
Values inner feelings and her own meaning; doesn't easily reveal her heart
ESFPMiki
Acts bright and skilled among people, but struggles to sort out her real feelings
ENFJMinato
Opens relationships first and connects people, but is slow to choose his own feelings
ISFJYota
Steadily piles up everyday consideration and tries to keep relationships stable

Going by the fan personality community's classifications, Koyuki can be read as INFP 4w5, Miki as ESFP 7w8, Minato as ENFJ 7w6, and Yota as ISFJ 9w1.

Some read Yota as an ESFJ, but in this post I'll look at him as an ISFJ, focusing on how he quietly and steadily piles up consideration.

Koyuki INFP 4w5, Who Notices Her Feelings but Can't Easily Voice Them

✦ The Four Leads' Enneagram Readings

Based on fan community classifications

Koyuki 4w5
• Looks deeply into her own feelings and identity but doesn't readily share her inner world
Miki 7w8
• Builds energy through relationships and activities; finds it hard to stay with uncomfortable feelings
Minato 7w6
• Wants to keep relationship possibilities open, but putting off a choice grows the conflict
Yota 9w1
• Tries to keep harmony and peace; tends to put his own discomfort aside

Koyuki realizes she likes Minato but can't turn that feeling into action right away. The two have already grown close, and she doesn't mind the distance they have now.

Fearing that a confession could make things awkward, or leave them unable to talk as easily as they do now, she persuades herself it's better to stay as they are. But hiding a feeling doesn't mean the feeling quietly settles down.

When word comes that Minato is going out with Momoka, Koyuki tries to act as if nothing is wrong, but when a result she didn't choose appears right in front of her, she finally feels the cost of her hesitation.

If you look for INFP traits in Koyuki, you can see that she values the feelings and meaning that arise within her more than answers set by others. Enneagram 4w5 digs deep into 'Who am I, and what is my heart?' yet doesn't easily reveal that inner world.

Koyuki likes Minato, but she even thinks through the fact that the moment she brings that feeling out, the relationship could change. It's not that she doesn't know her feelings; she attaches so much meaning to them that taking one step becomes hard.

Miki ESFP 7w8, Who Sorts Out Her Heart Behind a Bright Face

Miki was once a figure who drew attention like a school idol. She's used to mingling naturally among people and brightening the mood, but the image people like and her true feelings don't always match.

When Yota confessed the feelings he'd held for a long time, Miki treasured him but felt she couldn't answer with romantic feelings. The problem isn't the rejection itself but what comes after.

Even when she tries to treat Yota, her friend, as usual again, a corner of her heart feels uncomfortable, and laughing it off like before isn't easy either.

Reading Miki as ESFP 7w8, she has the ability to build the mood by bumping into people directly, and the strength to return to everyday life rather than stay trapped in uncomfortable feelings.

But a bright, skilled person doesn't always easily know her own heart. Because she's used to a special image like 'the school idol,' the moment of wondering what she actually wants can actually feel unfamiliar.

Miki seems to be wandering, less because she wants to be loved by everyone than between not wanting to disappoint others and wanting to be honest with her own feelings.

Minato ENFJ 7w6, Skilled at Getting Close to People but Slow to Decide His Own Heart

Minato is someone who approached without fearing the wall Koyuki built. He talks to her, spends time with her, and creates chances for the two to grow closer bit by bit.

The ENFJ charm lies in opening the door of a relationship first so the other person isn't left alone. But the ability to approach other people and the ability to sort out your own romantic feelings aren't the same thing.

Minato wants to be by Koyuki's side yet can't clearly turn down Momoka's feelings, and ends up going out with Momoka.

This is where the 7w6 side shows. The type 7 tendency is to keep possibilities open rather than stay long in a stifling, painful situation, and the 6 wing makes one conscious of relationships and the reactions of those around.

Minato seems to chat comfortably with anyone, but hesitates at the moment he has to choose the relationship he wants and sort out other possibilities. Trying to get along with everyone doesn't always lead to good results.

Because he put off a clear answer, Koyuki and Momoka each came to hold different expectations.

Yota ISFJ 9w1, Who Thinks of the Other Person First Even After Being Rejected

Yota is the quietest and gentlest of the four. He liked Miki for a long time, but conveying that feeling probably wasn't easy.

Even after he finally confessed and was rejected, he worries that Miki might feel uncomfortable around him and tries hard so the two can be as usual again.

Telling the person you like how you feel is a brave choice in itself, but Yota's nature shows even better in how he keeps adjusting the atmosphere so the other person is comfortable afterward.

Reading him as ISFJ 9w1, Yota is a character who remembers small changes and looks after people through steady actions rather than words.

With 9w1, the wish to keep relationships peaceful and the standard that 'you must not trouble others' tend to work together. So Yota worries more about Miki looking awkward than about the fact that he got hurt.

But the deeper the consideration, the easier it is to put your own feelings off. If he thinks he has to sort out his rejected feelings by himself and smile as though nothing happened, the price of his kindness becomes far too high.

Why Do the Four Hearts Keep Missing Each Other?

✦ How the Two Relationships Unfold

Based on Season 2, episodes 1 to 3

Koyuki and Minato
Both sense more than friendship; Koyuki hesitates to protect the current relationship; Minato ends up with Momoka; Koyuki belatedly senses jealousy and regret
Yota and Miki
Yota confesses; Miki rejects; awkwardness follows; they try to regain their usual relationship

Koyuki realizes her feelings for Minato yet tries to keep the current distance, and Miki, after rejecting Yota's confession, tries to restore the friendship.

Minato can't find his footing between wanting to go to Koyuki and being unable to push Momoka away, and Yota, even after being rejected by Miki, adjusts himself so that no one feels uncomfortable.

All four care about someone, but that consideration ends up keeping them from honestly saying how they feel.

The character fans find most frustrating yet most endearing is Minato. Someone skilled at closing the distance between people can't sort out his own heart and leaves several people in ambiguous positions. Yota also tugs at the heart.

Even after the great courage of a confession, he tries to hide his own wound first, worrying the other person might be uncomfortable. It's not Miki's fault that she couldn't answer with the same feelings, and Koyuki's fear is understandable too.

But if you keep hiding your feelings out of consideration for someone, it ends up being a wait for the other person to understand on their own.

Hoping the other person will fully understand your heart without you saying a word... mostly leads to sad or disappointing results. In real life too.

✦ What Each of the Four Wants to Protect

Each protects something different

KoyukiThe current relationship
MikiA way not to lose her friend
MinatoThe possibility of staying connected with people
YotaAn atmosphere where everyone is comfortable

That's why none of the four in The Ramparts of Ice can easily be written off as a bad person. They simply each protect something different.

Koyuki wants to protect the current relationship, Miki a way not to lose her friend, Minato the possibility of staying connected with people, and Yota an atmosphere where everyone is comfortable.

But for a relationship to take one more step forward, it will need not only the skill of hiding feelings but also the courage to face what changes when you speak honestly.

That's all for this post. See you next time.
