✦ Firefly Wedding at a Glance
Japan and Korea
Firefly Wedding began airing at 11:30 PM on Friday, October 9, 2026. It airs on Fuji TV's Noitamina block, and david production, known for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, is making it.
The original is a manga by Oreco Tachibana that has passed 5 million copies in circulation, and a live-action version is planned for 2027 on the Fuji TV network.
Crunchyroll is streaming it as it airs in many regions, and in Korea it aired as a subtitled version on AniBox at 1 AM on Saturday, October 10.
The main character Shinpei is introduced as "a hitman whose love is far too heavy," so today let's read where that heavy love comes from through attachment styles.
✦ The Story in Four Steps
Up to episode 1
Let's go over the plot first. Satoko, the daughter of a count's family, has been given a terminal diagnosis, and she dreams of marrying into a prestigious family to make her father proud.
But kidnapped and in a desperate situation where her life is in danger, she meets the hitman Shinpei and, to survive, proposes: "Marry me, and you can have everything." Shinpei accepts the proposal and soon becomes dangerously obsessed with Satoko.
A proposal that began as a lie became a life-changing promise for one person.
✦ Attachment Theory Timeline
In order
Attachment theory says the relationship you form with a caregiver in early childhood influences the way you relate to people later.
John Bowlby built the framework, and Mary Ainsworth sorted the types with an experiment that put children in a strange situation.
It is explained that an environment where the caregiver responds consistently is linked to the secure type, an environment where responses are inconsistent to the anxious type, and an environment with no response or rejection to the avoidant type.
On top of that, Mary Main and Judith Solomon observed children's contradictory behavior that these three could not explain and added the disorganized type.
The people who extended this theory to adult romance were Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver. In 1987 they argued that romantic relationships can also be read in a way similar to early attachment, and divided adults into secure, anxious, and avoidant.
Later, in 1991, Bartholomew and Horowitz proposed a model that divides adult attachment into four types, secure, preoccupied, dismissing-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant, based on how a person sees themselves and others.
✦ The Anxious Type and Shinpei
Where they overlap
The first type that overlaps with Shinpei is the anxious type. It is explained that the anxious type is linked to experiences where a caregiver responded warmly at times and coldly at others.
Since you never know when love will come, the habit forms of holding on as hard as you can while it is beside you.
The anxious type fears that a partner might leave, so it reacts sensitively to changes in the partner's expression and tone, and keeps wanting confirmation that it is loved.
Clinical psychologist Tracy King explained in an interview in July 2026 that the anxious type's heart is shaken by small changes in a text message, and to feel reassured they repeat questions like "Do you love me?" Jealousy and possessiveness growing stronger comes from the same root.
Shinpei, who takes Satoko's false proposal as real and bets everything on a single promise, looks like an extreme case of the anxious type, who can feel stable only by clinging to one person.
One review called Shinpei a "textbook yandere," saying he is tender one moment and murderous the next. Yandere is a word for a character who is pathologically obsessed with the person they love.
It's interesting that this sudden shift resembles the emotional swings of the anxious type. You could read the tenderness as the wish to protect love, and the murderous intent as the fear of losing love bursting out.
✦ Two Ways to Read Shinpei's Obsession
Because Satoko is terminally ill
This is where the fact that Satoko is terminally ill becomes important. The greatest fear of the anxious type is being abandoned. But Satoko is someone who, whatever happens, will leave first.
Shinpei's obsession can also be read as a desperate struggle to hold on to someone who is about to disappear, as well as a wish to protect her. In this case, the obsession can be read as the size of the fear of loss, not the size of love.
Still, it is hard to pin Shinpei down as just the anxious type. In adult romance, the type with both high anxiety and high avoidance is the fearful-avoidant. It can show up as wanting closeness but keeping distance for fear of being rejected or hurt.
So far Shinpei's clinging is obvious, but if scenes of him pushing Satoko away or avoiding her keep appearing, the reading could change.
✦ Anxious, Avoidant, Fearful-Avoidant
Differences in adult romance
Here is the difference between the three types at a glance. The anxious type wants closeness and clings because it fears being abandoned. The avoidant type is uncomfortable with closeness and keeps distance.
The fearful-avoidant wants closeness but fears getting hurt, so it avoids intimacy. Shinpei's clinging is so obvious that the anxious type is the center.
Violence is not the criterion that separates attachment types, so it is more accurate to watch whether he repeatedly tries to get close and then pushes away.
This is a reading through attachment theory, not an official setting. It has never been stated directly in the work which type Shinpei is, and the reading may change as the story unfolds.
Still, if you look at the obsession we used to label only as yandere through the eyes of psychology, you can see one more layer of why this character acts the way he does.
So what about real-life romance? Being anxious does not make someone a bad person. But if you can't tell the size of your love from the size of your anxiety, the relationship gets hard.
When anxiety rises, it helps to practice looking at what you are afraid of before demanding reassurance from your partner.
Telling your partner you feel anxious, instead of demanding confirmation, wears the relationship out less, and with a partner who accepts that kind of conversation, an anxious person can feel a lot more at ease.
To sum up, Shinpei's obsession is both love and lack. It is closer to clinging because he is afraid of losing, not because his love is big. Whether you cheer that love on or try to stop it will change depending on where the same obsession comes from.
I'm looking forward to how Shinpei and Satoko's story unfolds.
Well then, shall we begin today's adventure?
