Ranma 1/2 Season 3: Does MBTI Change When Gender Does?

Abstract image of swirling hot and cold water colliding

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 24:55 (that is, 0:55 a.m. on October 4 in Japan), Ranma 1/2 Season 3 aired its first episode. It airs on Nippon TV, and Netflix streams it exclusively right after the broadcast.

Looking at Ranma, who turns into a girl with cold water and back into a boy with hot water, a question comes up. If the body changes, does the personality type change with it? Opening the fan-vote data, the answer turned out to be surprisingly simple.

Why Ranma Turns Into a Girl

✦ The Cursed Spring

Who turns into what

Ranma
• Cold water: turns into a girl
• Hot water: turns back into a boy
Genma
• Turns into a panda
Ryoga
• Turns into the black piglet P-chan when splashed with water

Ranma and his father Genma fell into a cursed spring while training in China. Since then Ranma turns into a girl when splashed with cold water and back into a boy with hot water. Genma turns into a panda.

With this setup, asking about Ranma's MBTI adds one more question. Does a person whose gender changes have one type, or two?

The MBTI in this post is the result of fan votes. Personality Index (PDX) and Personality Database (PDB) are sites where users vote on the type they think each character is, and the results build up.

All vote counts are values checked on October 8, 2026, and the type nicknames follow 16Personalities.

Ranma Is ESTP, by a Landslide

✦ Ranma Saotome MBTI Votes

Personality Index (PDX), 68 votes, checked October 8, 2026

ESTP 52 votes
About 76% of 68 votes
ESFP 13 votes
ENFP 1 votes
ENTP 1 votes
ISTP 1 votes
On Personality Database (PDB), ESTP also comes first with 170 votes.

In the fan votes, Ranma Saotome is overwhelmingly ESTP (Entrepreneur). On PDX, 52 of 68 votes were ESTP, followed by ESFP with 13. On PDB, ESTP also came first with 170 votes.

For the Enneagram, 7w8 comes first on both sites, with 24 votes on PDX and 45 on PDB.

One thing worth noticing is that both sites run votes for Ranma as a single profile. They do not split the male form and the female form to assign separate types. It means that even when a bucket of water changes his form, fans see Ranma as one person.

The author's design points the same way. In a profile interview, Rumiko Takahashi said she thought of the braided hair so that Ranma would be recognizable at a glance whether as a man or a woman.

She said she had held the idea of a man who turns into a woman since before the series started, and that coming up with the hot and cold water triggers was actually harder.

Akane's Top Spot Differs by Site

✦ Akane Tendo MBTI Votes

Personality Index (PDX), 101 votes, checked October 8, 2026

ENFJ 44 votes
First and second place are one vote apart
ESFJ 43 votes
ESTJ 6 votes
ESTP 2 votes
ISTP 2 votes
On Personality Database (PDB), ESTJ comes first with 141 votes.

Akane Tendo is Ranma's fiancée and the third daughter of the Tendo dojo. Her votes are split. On PDX, among 101 votes, ENFJ (Protagonist) has 44 and ESFJ (Consul) has 43, a one-vote race. On PDB, meanwhile, ESTJ took first with 141 votes.

For the Enneagram, 1w2 comes first on both sites, with 15 votes on PDX and 72 on PDB.

The author did not find Akane easy to draw from the start either.

Takahashi said that after the serialization began, she could not quite understand the heroine Akane's feelings and found her hard to draw, so she decided the cause was her hairstyle and cut her hair off. Only then was she finally satisfied.

Ryoga Is ISFP on Both Sites

✦ Ryoga and Ukyo Vote Results

Checked October 8, 2026

✔ Ryoga, PDX: ISFP 45 of 60 votes, INFJ second with 11
✔ Ryoga, PDB: ISFP first with 103 votes
✔ Ryoga, Enneagram: 3w4 with 16 votes on PDX, 4w3 with 26 on PDB
✔ Ukyo, PDX: ESFJ 13 of 18 votes
✔ Ukyo, PDB: ESFJ first with 25 votes

Ryoga Hibiki gets matching results on both sites. On PDX, ISFP (Adventurer) has 45 of 60 votes with INFJ second at 11, and on PDB ISFP also comes first with 103 votes. The Enneagram splits: 3w4 leads on PDX with 16 votes and 4w3 leads on PDB with 26.

Ryoga carries a curse that turns him into the black piglet P-chan when he is splashed with water. He is Ranma's old rival, likes Akane, and has no sense of direction whatsoever.

Even in the same cursed-spring story, if Ranma is the one whose gender changes, Ryoga is the one who turns from a person into an animal.

Ukyo Is ESFJ

Ukyo Kuonji is ESFJ on top on both sites, with 13 of 18 votes on PDX and 25 votes on PDB. The number of votes is much smaller than for Ranma or Ryoga, though.

In the original, Ukyo is a woman who wears men's clothes, and she is Ranma's childhood friend who runs an okonomiyaki shop.

Does MBTI Change When Gender Does?

✦ The Four at a Glance

First place on PDX and PDB, checked October 8, 2026

RanmaESTP 52 of 68 votes
PDB: 170 votes, first
AkaneENFJ 44, ESFJ 43 of 101 votes
PDB: ESTJ 141 votes, first
RyogaISFP 45 of 60 votes
PDB: 103 votes, first
UkyoESFJ 13 of 18 votes
PDB: 25 votes, first

To sum up the four: Ranma is ESTP, Ryoga is ISFP, and Ukyo is ESFJ, with the same first place on both sites, and only Akane splits among ENFJ, ESFJ, and ESTJ. For the Enneagram, Ranma (7w8) and Akane (1w2) match across both sites, but Ryoga splits.

Going by the fan votes, Ranma has one type. ESTP is first by a landslide on both sites, and both treat Ranma as a single profile. The curse changes the body, and the type fans assign is attached to the person.

That ties in with the author making the two forms look like the same person with the braided hair.

Still, Akane's interpretation is wide enough that first place differs by site. Since Season 3 has Ryoga's Bakusai Tenketsu episode, it may be fun to look at the rivalry between Ranma and Ryoga again as ESTP versus ISFP.

Well then, shall we begin today's adventure?
