My Happy Marriage Special Episodes: Two Ways of Caring

An illustration of a couple in traditional Japanese clothing standing together under cherry blossoms at dusk

Once two people have promised to marry, what's left probably isn't confirming their love. It's learning how to give and receive that love in an ordinary day.

Miyo Saimori and Kiyoka Kudou chose each other, and they got through a big crisis together. But a wedding getting close doesn't make every moment together feel natural.

✦ The Two Leads at a Glance

Types read from their behavior

MiyoISFJ 9w1
Reads people closely and puts her own wants last
KiyokaISTJ 1w9
Shows care through action, slower with feelings

Kiyoka tries to show his feelings through actions, but Miyo gets flustered in front of his affection. Kiyoka, for his part, can't quite tell how she'll take what he does. The early part of the Special Episodes shows that gap through everyday scenes.

Miyo: Why It's Hard to Say What She Feels

In the Saimori household, Miyo lived like a maid and never got a family's warmth. She was more used to quietly putting up with things or reading other people's moods first than to saying what she wanted.

✦ How Miyo Handles a Wish

Her habit when she wants something

1Think of the burden first
Will this be a bother to them?
2Hold the wish back
Don't say what she wants
3Work harder instead
Try harder and sacrifice more

So even when she wants something from someone, Miyo first wonders whether she'll be a bother. Rather than say what she wants, she's gotten into the habit of thinking she can just try harder and sacrifice more.

After Miyo came to the Kudou household, Kiyoka is kind to her. He asks what she likes and helps her rest, body and mind. The change is huge for Miyo, but she couldn't learn how to express her own feelings all at once.

She's grateful for his kindness, but she can't respond comfortably.

Read this way, Miyo comes across as an ISFJ 9w1. She watches the tone and expressions of the people around her closely, and she adjusts her own behavior so the relationship doesn't go wrong.

When a conflict comes up, she looks for her own shortcomings before standing up to anyone, and quietly does what she can.

Miyo is used to noticing what someone needs without being told and taking care of it, but she's clumsy at putting what she wants at the center of a conversation. Putting other people's comfort first turned into a habit of hiding what she wants.

The 9w1 tendency fits how Miyo longs for a peaceful relationship. Having to push her own wants aside for so long only made that attitude set harder.

Kiyoka: A Man Who Shows Affection Through Action

As a soldier, Kiyoka handles his duties clearly, and he acts himself to protect the people he's taken responsibility for. Choosing Miyo as his marriage partner wasn't just a passing feeling either.

He changed his actual life so Miyo can live safely at his side, and he shows through actions that he means to keep the relationship going.

✦ What Kiyoka's Type Looks Like

Responsibility first, feelings second

✔ Acts first: Judges what needs doing and takes responsibility
✔ Keeps promises: Doesn't take them lightly
✔ Weak spot: Reading how the other person feels

Kiyoka can be read as an ISTJ 1w9. Before any knack for smoothing the mood with words, what comes out first is judging what needs doing and taking responsibility.

He isn't rich in emotional expression, but he doesn't take promises lightly, and he has a strong sense of responsibility about seeing his share through. He's somewhat clumsy at reading feelings, though.

He handles what he's given precisely, but he's not good at noticing whether the other person is emotionally ready to take it in.

✦ How the Special Episodes Open

Three early scenes

1The two get close
Miyo is overwhelmed and cries
2Hazuki Kudou steps in
She takes Miyo to a cooking class
3An old classmate appears
Miyo meets Kimio Nagaba

Early in the Special Episodes, when the two get close, Miyo is so overwhelmed that she cries. She already trusts Kiyoka and has chosen a future together.

But in front of the suddenly shortened distance and unfamiliar intimacy, she couldn't settle her heart calmly.

Here's where the two have to adjust to each other. Kiyoka sincerely wants to protect Miyo and tries to act on it. But he doesn't really know whether she's emotionally ready, or what exactly she wants right now.

Miyo, on the other hand, finds it hard to put her feelings into words. And she works hard not to let him down.

Hazuki watches their clumsy moments with affection, then takes Miyo to a cooking class. With the wedding ahead, it gives Miyo a chance to mix with other women and widen her world instead of worrying only about her relationship with Kiyoka.

Hazuki doesn't hand Miyo the answers. Instead, she leads Miyo outside one step at a time, so Miyo can experience a new situation on her own.

There, Miyo runs into Kimio Nagaba, a classmate from elementary school. Kimio shows he's glad to meet her again, but a dark shadow lingers in his eyes. This meeting brings in another character who contrasts with Miyo, who is preparing for a happy marriage.

Caring for Each Other Doesn't Have to Look the Same

✦ Same Feeling, Different Directions

Two ways of showing care

MiyoCares for others while hiding what she wants
KiyokaActs without reading her heart

The appeal of this work is that their kindness points in different directions. Kiyoka acts for the other person but can't read what's in her heart, while Miyo tries to look after the other person while hiding what she wants.

But if one side keeps holding back and the other keeps trying to help without knowing what's inside, that kind of love will leave both of them exhausted.

✦ What Each of Them Needs

So their feelings can be understood

Miyo
• Experience that speaking her mind is okay
Kiyoka
• Waiting for her to say what she feels

Miyo needs to build up experience that saying what's on her mind doesn't break the relationship. Kiyoka needs to wait for Miyo to express her feelings before rushing out solutions.

If Miyo doesn't speak, Kiyoka has a hard time knowing her heart. And if Kiyoka decides everything for her, Miyo misses the chance to show what she wants.

If you want someone to look after you, you have to say what you want. If you want to look after them, you have to help them say what they want. One-sided help or fake consideration is hard to keep up for long.

They've already chosen each other. What's interesting in the early Special Episodes isn't a grand event to prove their love. It's watching them learn how to offer and accept their feelings in ordinary moments.

When Miyo reaches out to Kiyoka without hiding her feelings, and Kiyoka looks into Miyo's heart instead of putting only his own way first, their relationship can get more comfortable.

For two people about to marry, the change that's left isn't making their feelings bigger. It's passing along feelings that have already grown huge in a form the other can actually understand.

That's all for this post. See you next time.
