Grid gets a legendary job, and his status window says level -3. The first thing he does is calculate how to turn that job into quick money. He designs a giant greatsword and tries to join a high-level guild, but neither works out.
Real-World Debt, In-Game Opportunity
✦ Shin Youngwoo's Real Life and Satisfy
Why the game matters so much to him
To understand why Grid clings to fast rewards, you have to start with the real Shin Youngwoo. He keeps working grueling day-labor jobs to pay off his debt.
The VR MMORPG he plays, Satisfy, has 2 billion players worldwide, and the wealth and fame earned there affect real life too. So the game isn't just a way to pass the time.
For Shin Youngwoo, succeeding in the game is one of the few chances he has to change his situation.
So instead of building his skills slowly over a long time, he goes after any opportunity with a big payout. In real life he's living hand to mouth, so one big win in the game looks far more appealing.
Getting the Legendary Job
✦ How Grid Ends Up With the Legendary Job
Four steps from quest to job change
Grid finds Pagma's Tome while carrying out an S-rank quest from Earl Ashur. Using the book would turn him into the legendary Pagma's Successor, but Grid figures selling it at a high price beats getting the job.
In the end, breaking the quest contract puts his life under threat from Earl Ashur, and he has no choice but to change jobs.
✦ Before and After the Job Change
What Pagma's Successor cost him
But the moment he gets the legendary job, a problem appears. The level 73 warrior he was before the change is reset, and with the death penalty from the quest on top, Grid starts over at a negative level.
The legendary job change gave him a blacksmith's skills, not great combat power. The job title sounds like a huge break. In reality, he's lost his earlier fighting ability and has to figure out how to survive right now with only a crafting job.
✦ Grid's Personality Type: ESTP 7w8
Fast action, big rewards
When Grid spots an opportunity, he moves fast and checks how big the payout is first. His drive to get the result he wants with his own hands is a strength, but he doesn't really calculate the risk of breaking a contract.
Grid badly wants to change his reality quickly, so he underestimates the process and the limits he has to get through before reaching the result.
He changed jobs after getting cornered trying to sell Pagma's Tome, and that was improvisation, pulled out when he had nowhere left to run.
He's great at spotting a chance in a flash, but he isn't the type to plan systematically and push it through. I'd say that's a textbook ESTP 7w8.
Why Can't a Legendary Job Make a Greatsword?!
Because of what he did during the S-rank quest, Grid can't respawn at Yatan Temple and gets sent to Bairan Village, an area for advanced players. But monsters in the level 100s roam around Bairan, and Grid is level -3 and can't even afford carriage fare.
Stranded in a high-level area, with his level reset and no money, everything hits him at once. Even with a legendary job, he can't earn money by hunting, and he can't move to another area.
✦ Why the Greatsword Stalled
Three things he didn't have
So Grid decides to use his legendary job to make a powerful greatsword and sell it. His quick wits and creativity are impressive. He has no qualms about sketching out the item he wants in grand style.
And on the design screen, an incredible weapon appears, with an option that makes meteors fall. The problem is that he picked the performance he wanted on the design screen, but only later realized that actually making the item takes materials and side work.
Grid can picture the result first and then act fast to get it. But the high attack power on the design screen is only a possibility he drew in his head. It isn't a real weapon until he secures materials and goes through the crafting process.
Besides, at level -3 even raising funds by hunting is hard. In the end, the greatsword plan failed not simply because he had no ore, but because he never worked out step by step what to solve first and just acted boldly on whatever idea popped into his head.
This ESTP style can show amazing speed at times, but it also leaves gaps just as easily.
Backing Off From Regas, Starting With the Basics
Once the greatsword stalls, Grid looks for another way. If hunting alone is hard, he figures it's better to get help from a high-level guild.
But Regas, the top-ranked martial artist, says he has to prove his skill to join, and Grid refuses the duel and runs away. Fighting Regas at level -3 would be reckless anyway.
Every time, Grid finds a way to flip his situation in one move, but he doesn't have the conditions for it to work. Pagma's Tome brought the risk of a broken contract, the greatsword had no materials, and he lacked the skill to prove himself to the guild.
✦ Learning the Basics From Smith
Unlike a flashy design, you fill in the conditions yourself
In the end, Grid asks Smith, the blacksmith of Bairan, to teach him the basics. Smith sees through Grid's wish to make money easily, so instead of handing over some special trick, he has him learn the fundamentals.
Grid starts by chopping wood and gathering ore. This labor doesn't promise any great result right away, unlike the flashy greatsword design. But there's an important difference from his earlier plans.
Chopping wood and gathering ore is the process of filling in, by hand, the conditions real crafting needs.
Instead of stopping at imagining that he can make money fast, he slowly starts on what he has to do right now to make things.
Not Giving Up Greed, but Learning to Realize It Step by Step
What Grid has to learn isn't giving up his greed. It's not skipping the steps that lead to the result he wants. He still wants big money, and he isn't the type to settle for small wins.
What's changed isn't the greed itself, but that he's slowly started to learn what it takes to turn that greed into reality.
Grid isn't a reliable hero from the start. He's impatient, a bit of a show-off, and quick to get cornered when he fails.
What makes his growth interesting isn't that he's great from the start, but that he lives through the cost of his rash choices and gradually closes the gap between his abilities and reality.
That's all for this post. See you next time.
