Love Through a Prism: Talent or Effort? Lili & Kit's Types

Love Through a Prism Lili and Kit

Spoiler: Season 1, episodes 1 to 10 (There are spoilers from the very start, so be warned!! If you haven't watched Season 1 of Love Through a Prism yet, turn back right now!! Shoo, shoo!)

For Lili, studying abroad in London isn't only a romantic adventure. If she doesn't take first place at art school within six months, she has to go back to Japan, take over the family kimono shop, and get married.

On her first day in London, Lili is captivated by the sketch of a stranger who gave her directions. The young man was Kit, a celebrated genius painter at the school.

Admiration soon turns into rivalry, but the standards the two apply when looking at the same painting are different from the start.

Episode 9 of Love Through a Prism, 'Gradations of Talent and Effort,' is an episode that shows that difference in a painful yet vivid way.

✦ Lili and Kit at a Glance

Fan community classification and this post's reading

LiliENFP, 4w3
Finds possibility in new people and landscapes and wants to experience it herself
KitISFP, 4w5
Expresses his work through what is in front of him and his own standards

In fan personality communities, Lili is classified as ENFP 4w3 and Kit as ISFP 4w5. MBTI is a fan community's character classification, not an official setting of the work.

Going by this combination, Lili jumps in herself when she discovers a new possibility, while Kit digs into painting with his own senses and standards. On top of that, both of them are Enneagram core type 4.

They share the trait of valuing their own identity and expression, but the wings differ, and so does the way they show that heart.

Lili, ENFP 4w3: Someone Who Tries to Prove Her Potential Through Painting

✦ Lili's Scenes

Episodes 1 to 7

1Episode 1
Arriving in London, Lili is captivated by a stranger's sketch
2Episode 3
She follows Kit to a cave and discovers the beauty of the English countryside
3Episode 4
She struggles but acts steady toward her family
4Episode 7
She works to earn living expenses and runs short of time to paint

In episode 1, what moves Lili's heart is not the handsome young man's face but the sketch he drew. She falls for the painting first and wants to know more about the gaze inside it.

What suggests ENFP is that rather than hesitating in an unfamiliar environment, she finds possibility in the new people and landscapes she meets. She's the type who goes up and experiences things herself when her interest is sparked.

In episode 3, Lili follows Kit to a cave, wondering if she can find out his secret to drawing. But what she brings back isn't a notebook of a genius's secrets.

It's the experience of discovering the beauty of the English countryside and meeting a world she hadn't yet seen. It began with the rivalry of wanting to catch up with Kit, but curiosity takes Lili somewhere wider.

It's a moment that shows well the ENFP movement of seeing new possibilities and finding your own meaning in them.

✦ Type Notes

Enneagram type 4 and its wings

Type 4
• Looks for identity, self-expression, and personal meaning
4w3
• The 4's individuality plus an orientation toward achievement and recognition
4w5
• The 4's individuality plus independence, inquiry, and inner focus

That doesn't mean Lili lives on romance and curiosity alone. In episode 4, Lili struggles in many ways yet pretends to be steady in her letters to her family.

In episode 7, she throws herself into work to earn living expenses and doesn't even have enough time to paint. Painting is something she loves, but it's also something she has to prove she can survive on as a painter.

Lili even has a time limit: she must take first place within six months. This is where the 4w3 combination becomes clear. Enneagram type 4 wants to find 'a color of my own,' and the 3 wing adds the desire to show that color through results and be recognized.

So Lili's drive to beat Kit isn't only rivalry. While wanting to paint her own pictures, when she looks at Kit's work she first feels sharply what she lacks.

If she works hard she can surely get better, but the moment she compares herself with others, her strengths look small and only her shortcomings feel big. Lili wavers in exactly that trap.

The goal of surpassing Kit pushes Lili forward, but at times it also takes away the room to enjoy painting.

Kit, ISFP 4w5: Someone Who Sees Painting With His Own Senses

✦ Reading Kit Through Scenes

Sensory honesty and its weakness

✔ Episode 3: Shows the beauty of the landscape itself instead of a drawing secret
✔ Episode 5: His family estate hints at the pressure he carries as a noble
✔ Episode 9: Honest about his own standards, but misses what painting weighs for others
✔ Episode 10: He does not show up at school

Kit is a character who shows painting through sketches and actions first rather than explaining it at length in words. In episode 3, Lili follows him expecting his secret to drawing, but what Kit opens up with her is the beauty of the landscape itself.

Finding clues for expression in the light and shapes before his eyes and in the scenes he meets directly fits the sensory, personal gaze of an ISFP.

He's closer to someone who puts out what he saw and felt as work than to someone who convinces others why he paints.

In episode 5, Lili visits Kit's family's wide estate and catches a glimpse of the pressure he carries as a noble. Kit looks like someone who has both talent and wealth, but that status comes with family expectations and a role.

That doesn't mean he judges even his own work by others' standards. If you read him as a 4w5, with the 5 wing's independence and inquisitiveness added to the 4's individuality, his attitude of protecting his own world becomes clearer.

For Kit, painting is less a race to take a rank than a way to express the world he sees. That's why he seems not to care much about others' reactions or evaluations, and shows an attitude of not treating his own work as special either.

Right here, Kit's strength turns into a weakness. Being honest about your own standards is a strength as an artist, but if you can't understand what painting weighs for other people, that honesty can become cold, careless words.

Episode 9: The Fight Between Talent and Effort Explodes

✦ Episode 9 to Episode 10

The clash and what follows

1Shin's sculpture
A new sculpture major earns a good result in the critique
2Peter's agony
He agonizes that his talent is ordinary
3The argument
Kit and Peter clash over talent, effort, and evaluation
4The slap
Lili slaps Kit
5Episode 10
Kit stays away from school and Lili agonizes over her violent behavior

In episode 9, when the sculpture made by Shin, a new sculpture major, earns a good result in the critique, Peter agonizes that his own talent is ordinary. Kit and Peter get into an argument over talent, effort, and the evaluation of work.

Kit is closer to the attitude that he doesn't think his own paintings are special and that he should just paint what he wants to paint. But for Peter, painting doesn't end at doing what you love.

He has to catch up with others and produce results to hold on to his future as a painter.

In this argument, the scene where Lili slaps Kit lands quite hard. Lili is also someone struggling to prove her ability without even enough time to paint.

So she understands why Peter is hurt and can't stand Kit looking at the situation only by his own standards. In my view, this scene doesn't present Lili as a cool champion of justice.

Her understanding of Peter's situation is convincing, but slapping him was also a choice in which emotion came first. Wanting to say the right thing and the way you hurt someone are separate things.

✦ How Their Relationship Changes

From rivals to a clash

1Captivated by a sketch
2Rivalry
3A clash of views on art
4Lili's violent reaction and regret

What makes this clash hurt more is that Kit also didn't mean to torment his friends. Kit just spoke honestly about how he treats his own art, but the others are staking their livelihoods and futures on those words.

The freedom that comes naturally to him may be a condition someone else desperately wants, and in that moment Kit failed to grasp it properly. When Kit doesn't show up at school in episode 10, Lili agonizes over her violent behavior.

It became not something that ends with one argument, but an incident that exposed how little the two of them knew of each other's worlds.

Both Are Type 4, So Why Do They Approach Painting Differently?

✦ Same Type 4, Different Wings

Lili vs Kit

Lili (4w3)
• Wants her own color
• Tries to prove it to the world
• Leans toward achievement and recognition
Kit (4w5)
• Wants his own color
• Tries first to protect it by his own standards
• Leans toward independence and inquiry

At the center of Enneagram type 4 is the desire to find your own identity and expression. Lili's 4w3 reads as wanting to prove that identity through achievement. On top of the question 'What kind of painter am I?' comes the wish to 'show that I made it.'

Kit's 4w5, on the other hand, digs deeper into his inner gaze and independent expression. Both want a color of their own, but Lili tries to prove that color to the world, while Kit tries first to protect it by his own standards.

Yoko Kamio, who handled the original work, character designs, and script, said she created Lili hoping that people who watch her would gain strength, and that Kit was refined, after discussion, into a sharper genius type.

Indeed, Lili's bright, active movement and Kit's edgy honesty collide head-on in episode 9. The difference in personalities the creators built leads to the story's biggest conflict.

To me, the answer this work offers isn't a simple line like 'talent wins' or 'effort never betrays you.' Talent can move the starting line forward, but that alone doesn't make you understand other people's hearts.

Effort builds skill, but if you only take others as your standard, you may forget why you liked painting. Lili has to find her own painting instead of becoming like Kit, and Kit has to learn that his way isn't everything.

The reason the two are true rivals isn't only that they envy each other's talent, but that each believes their own way of approaching painting is right.

So I think episode 9, where different views of art collide and expose both their weaknesses, is the core of this work, more than any scene deciding who is the better painter.

Just in case... did you read my whole post without having watched this work? Oh no..! Why not go watch it now? It'll be fun.

That's all for this post. See you next time.
