Quick Readers Care More About How Others See Them
✦ Main Characters
Miyu Suzuki and Yusuke Tani
Suzuki is lively when she's talking with friends. But once she starts liking Tani, that ease keeps slipping. She acts playful so her feelings don't show, and when it looks like the two of them might get found out, she denies it first.
Then, just as she and Tani seem to be drifting apart, she opens up to her friends and confesses to him herself. Her feelings were clear from the start. So why couldn't she show them all this time?
Suzuki reads the mood between people fast, but that skill doesn't always lead to good results. When you're busy watching how others react, you can miss what matters to you.
✦ The Two of Them, Step by Step
Hand-holding, denial, then confession
The day they walk home together, Tani takes Suzuki's hand. She's flustered, but a little happy too. Then the next day, Yamada asks if the two of them are dating, and she denies it on the spot. Tani hears it and tells her to forget about yesterday.
Suzuki realizes that denying the relationship in front of others looked to Tani like a 'rejection of his confession.' After telling her friends she likes Tani, she confesses to him.
She apologizes, saying she was playful with him because she was embarrassed about getting caught liking him, and tells him straight that she wants to spend more time together.
Suzuki, ESFJ 3w2: Hiding Her Feelings to Be Seen as a Good Person
Suzuki is bright and sociable. She's also quick to pick up on her friends' reactions, and she adjusts her words and actions to cut down the chance of things getting awkward. She's often conscious of how she looks to others, too.
Coming at Tani playfully even though she likes him is partly fear as well, the fear of getting rejected and watching the relationship break.
She only confesses honestly after her friends cheer her on, and that scene shows she values relationships but can't shake free of other people's eyes. It's not that her friends swept her into it. Suzuki wanted to confess for real.
But caring about what others think, and the fear that the relationship might break, made Suzuki hesitate.
✦ Suzuki on the First Date
Lots of preparation, then stiff and awkward
That tendency shows up even more on their first date.
Suzuki gets advice from friends and reads dating columns to figure out how to look good to Tani, but once they're actually spending time together, she gets so conscious of how she should act that she goes stiff.
Instead of enjoying the time with him, her attention is stuck on checking whether she looks like a nice girl.
✦ Suzuki, ESFJ 3w2
She hides her real feelings because she wants to be seen as a good person
You can read the Type 3 side in her wish to be seen as attractive and decent, and the 2 wing in how badly she wants to get close and trade affection.
During the date, Suzuki worries about whether Tani had as much fun as she did. But the harder she tries to look cooler and more attractive to him, and the more she worries she might be boring, you can feel things getting more uncomfortable and awkward.
On the other hand, the more she lets go of the pressure to impress him, the more naturally she shows her real self, and Tani ends up enjoying the time with her too.
Tani, ISTP 9w1: Quiet, Practical and Honest
✦ Tani, ISTP 9w1
Quiet, but honest and never pushy
Tani doesn't say much, but he's clear about what he thinks. On the walk home with Suzuki, he takes her hand first and shows he likes her through action.
The next day, when she denies their relationship in front of a friend, he says 'let's forget about yesterday.' He won't try to turn her mind around just because he likes her.
In other words, when Tani likes someone he acts honestly, but if he thinks they don't want it, he doesn't push.
Tani's ISTP side shows on the first date too. Not knowing what to talk about with Suzuki, he searches his phone for 'how to keep a conversation going with a girlfriend.' He doesn't stop at vaguely thinking he should be better at dating.
He works out what he's missing right now and looks for a concrete method. It's the same when he's talking with Suzuki on the date. Tani isn't one for long sentimental speeches.
He'd rather explain, in concrete terms, what he actually observed and what he thought of it.
✦ Three Moments Behind the 9w1
Protecting the relationship, and saying it straight
You can see the 9w1 side in how Tani treats his partner. Explaining why he tried not to tell Yamada about dating Suzuki, he says he didn't want her reputation to suffer because of him. He worried about the effect on Suzuki before he worried about going public.
When she denied the relationship, he took her words in and stepped back. He's the type who won't make things hard for someone over his own feelings, or force a relationship to keep going. This is where the 9's urge to protect a peaceful relationship shows.
The seriousness of the 1 wing comes in too. After the first date, Tani says straight out that the place and movie Suzuki picked weren't things he'd normally choose, but he had fun because he was with her.
For him, getting his real feelings across accurately matters as much as going along with the other person. He doesn't just agree with everything or dodge uncomfortable talks. He respects the other person while saying honestly what he feels.
Outwardly calm and light on emotional expression, Tani still looks for the methods he needs for someone he likes and says what he feels to their face. That's why he reads as an ISTP 9w1.
A Sweet, Innocent Love Story
Once Suzuki and Tani's relationship gets out among their classmates, Shuji Hira asks Suzuki why she picked Tani. He's been predicting who'd end up together based on where everyone ranks in the class pecking order, so he can't understand why Suzuki likes Tani.
✦ Hira's Question, Suzuki's Answer
Tani is cool for keeping his own standards
Then Suzuki says Tani is cool because he doesn't change his attitude based on what others think and keeps to his own standards.
For Suzuki, who tries so hard to match everyone's mood, Tani speaking his mind no matter what people think came across as attractive.
Now that's a sweet, innocent love story, right? Have you ever... had a young love like this yourself?
If you're curious about Suzuki and Tani's love story, I'd recommend watching this show. It should be fun.
That's all for this post. See you next time.
