All He Wanted Was a Quiet Life, but Problems Keep Showing Up...
✦ How a Quiet Life Turned Into a Mess
Four steps from a pet search to the other world's trouble
Sasaki didn't want adventure or a big career in the first place. After coming home from work, he went looking for a pet and met Peeps, who gave him magic and the ability to cross over to another world.
After that, he started a business: taking goods from Japan and selling them in the other world.
He even ran a restaurant himself, building a life that didn't depend on his company paycheck alone. What he wanted wasn't a hero's life saving the world, but some 'breathing room' to eat what he felt like and rest when he felt like it.
He started that trade in the other world simply to earn money by selling goods he sourced in Japan.
✦ Who's Who
Sasaki, Peeps, and the people he gets tangled up with
Back in the real world, his magic gets mistaken for supernatural ability, and he starts getting linked to the Cabinet Office Paranormal Phenomena Countermeasures Bureau.
In the other world, he hears that Elsa, Müller's daughter, has been taken hostage by Duke Einhart.
The other world is also in the middle of a political fight over who gets the throne, and Sasaki's name even comes up because of his ties to Kepler Trading Company, which he dealt with when supplying war materials in the past.
Once the Elsa hostage situation comes out too, Sasaki says he bears some responsibility himself and offers to help Müller.
✦ The Deal Prince Adonis Puts on the Table
What he offers, and what Sasaki asks for in return
Prince Adonis informs Sasaki that he'll receive a baron's title and Rectan Plain. The land is a remote border territory without even a proper village. On top of that, he has to build a wall to guard the border.
Sasaki promises not to return to the capital until the wall is done, and in exchange asks for Elsa to be sent home. After that, he spends several days rounding up the people and supplies he needs.
✦ Why Elsa Can't Just Say No
The hostage situation is over, but the marriage offer isn't
But Elsa's problem isn't solved just because the hostage situation is over. She still faces a political marriage offer that would make her a consort to the first prince.
The prince Müller's family backs is the second prince, so accepting would put Elsa on the opposite side from her father's political position. Elsa thinks she's a burden to her father, and that another faction could use her like a hostage.
In the end, Elsa says she doesn't want to cause her father trouble, and she's in so much pain she wishes she were dead.
Sasaki asks whether the marriage offer can't be turned down, but Müller explains what refusing a royal proposal would mean politically for the whole house.
It isn't something that ends with Elsa saying she doesn't want to. There's also the pressure the Müller house would have to bear after a refusal. That's when Peeps suggests that Elsa stay for a while in the world where Sasaki lives.
Time runs differently in the two worlds, so years spent in the modern world might be only a few months in the other. That would buy time until things around the marriage offer change.
Sasaki: ISTJ 6w5
✦ What Sasaki Designs
Three scenes behind the ISTJ reading
The basis for reading Sasaki as ISTJ is his habit of laying out concrete methods that actually work in reality. When he started trading in the other world, he didn't just chase a vague dream of getting rich.
He designed a 'structure' for sourcing goods in Japan and selling them in the other world.
Even when rescuing Elsa, he doesn't just jump blindly into the fight over the throne. He sets a condition: he'll take the baron's title and the territory and build the wall, and in return he asks for Elsa's return.
Once he picks a goal, he's the type to work out in concrete terms the conditions it needs and the work he has to take on.
The 6w5 side shows up in how he lowers risk in uncertain situations and lines up partners he can trust. When he's trapped in an isolated space, Sasaki doesn't treat Magical Pink as just an enemy and proposes a temporary truce.
He acknowledged her goal, but first sorted out the problem they had to solve together right then. And on Elsa's situation, he doesn't try to flip the political marriage offer in one go. He works with Shizuka and sets up a safe place for her to stay.
It's an attitude of not shouldering a problem alone, but lining up conditions with someone he can trust to keep risk to a minimum.
✦ How Sasaki Ends Up With Other People's Problems
No lofty goal behind it
Sasaki doesn't end up with other people's problems because of some lofty goal like 'I'm going to save everyone.'
It's just that his name gets tangled in the succession fight, or a Bureau mission puts him face to face with a hostile opponent, or a close colleague asks for help, and he ends up dealing with each one as it comes.
He doesn't brag that he can solve everything, either.
He just separates what he can do right now from what needs other people's help, and builds the conditions for working together.
✦ The Dependable Coworker
The office type Sasaki brings to mind
In Sasaki, who wishes for an ordinary life yet keeps taking on new responsibilities, I can see the ISTJ. Every office has someone like that, right?
The one who seems to quietly keep to their own work, but pitches in with real effort when someone asks for help, and solves just about any problem like some kind of whiz. That kind of dependable coworker.
So what do you think? Doesn't the story of Sasaki, who is as ordinary as ordinary gets (judging by his looks alone, he's wildly ordinary...), sorting out one headache after another between the real world and the other world, make you curious?
If you haven't watched the series yet, give it a try.
That's all for this post. See you next time.
