Returner's Magic S2 MBTI: How Far Should You Trust Allies?

Desir and his three companions casting magic before Evanaten under the Shadow World's fog

* Spoiler warning: This includes the major setup and ending of Season 1 and some content from Season 2. I recommend watching first!

Can knowing the future let you save the world perfectly? Desir Herrman is someone who lived through a future where the world is destroyed and came back 13 years earlier. He got a second chance, but he doesn't know every answer.

The problem he runs into this season is closer to 'how do we work through what's happening right in front of us together with our companions' than to 'how much of the future knowledge do you remember.'

What You Need to Know First

In this work there's the 'Shadow World,' which floods in from another dimension and eats away at the real world. If you don't clear the Shadow Labyrinths in it in time, black fog spreads, and in the end humanity is wiped out.

Desir survived to the very end and faced the final boss with his companions, but failed. But when he opened his eyes, he was back 13 years earlier, on the day of the Hebrion Academy entrance ceremony.

✦ Desir and His Three Companions

Who keeps coming up in this post

Desir HerrmanLived through the end of the world and returned 13 years earlier
Romantica EruWind mage
Pram SchneiderSkilled with the sword
Azest KingscrownUses ice magic and swordsmanship together

This time, to stop the same tragedy, he gathers his companions again using his memories of the future. They are Romantica, the wind mage; Pram, skilled with the sword; and Azest, who uses ice magic and swordsmanship together.

The three differ not just in fighting style. They differ in how they react to crisis and in how they do the job that's theirs. Just because Desir alone remembers the future doesn't mean he can know every secret of the Shadow Worlds still ahead.

Two Problems Faced at Evanaten

In Season 2, Desir's party had to repel Esteban's attack at Evanaten and then immediately faced the crisis of refugees pouring in.

Combat needs each person's skill, and the refugee problem needs thinking about whether there's any way other than sacrificing someone. The two incidents show that the four, though on the same side, solve problems in different ways.

That difference shows in what choices and actions each one actually takes.

Desir Herrman — ENFJ 1w2

✦ Desir's Type Reasoning

Why ENFJ 1w2

ENFJ
• Points to the warrior's tribal honor and the tribe's future to persuade
• Reads people's motives and finds a shared goal
1w2
• Refuses to sacrifice either the residents or the refugees
• Digs into why the refugees came

Desir reads as ENFJ 1w2. When persuading Esteban's warrior, he doesn't start with words that subdue the opponent. He points out that they value their tribe's honor and asks what would happen to the rest of the tribe if the chieftain died fighting.

It wasn't 'pretending to understand them'; he showed that there's a contradiction between what they want to protect and their current actions. The ENFJ's leadership of reading people's motives and finding a shared goal shows in this conversation.

The 1w2 side becomes clearer in the refugee problem. Lord Wilhelm is pressured to choose whether to protect the domain's residents or the refugees first, but Desir answers that he'll find a way to save everyone within three days.

He doesn't stop at asserting a principle of sacrificing no one; he digs into why the refugees came this far. In the process, the heavy taxes of the holy capital Godheim and the problem of missing children come to light.

He read that if you only fill the immediate food shortage, the crisis will repeat.

Desir's sense of responsibility becomes a weakness too. His belief that he must make an effort and save everyone is so strong that he tries to shoulder the solution alone.

The refugee problem started to be resolved not only through his effort but also as a result of his companions each acting. The growth Desir needs isn't figuring out more answers alone, but accepting the answers his companions bring into his own plan.

Romantica Eru — ESTP 7w8

✦ Romantica's Type Reasoning

Why ESTP 7w8

ESTP
Finds the roles and connections she can use right away and reads the situation on the spot
7w8
Creates, in a blocked situation, the options others missed

Romantica can be seen as ESTP 7w8. After entering the Shadow World and being separated from the party, she doesn't wait until Desir comes for her but uses the role of a merchant to start a business.

In the process she makes contact with locals and gathers information about the heavy taxes and the incidents of children disappearing.

Her way of finding the roles and connections she can use right away to read the situation, even in an unfamiliar environment, connects with the ESTP's on-site response.

Romantica's real value shows in not considering her part done even after collecting information. Right before the refugee expulsion begins, she arranges food herself and returns to Evanaten.

She brought real resources to a problem threatening immediate survival. And she says bluntly to Desir, who tries to take the solution on alone, to trust his companions.

The 7w8's initiative isn't simply a personality that leads or is optimistic, but shows up as an attitude of creating, in a blocked situation, the options others missed.

Romantica isn't a helper who just follows Desir's plan. She adds the information and supplies she got in the field and even points out the leader's weaknesses. Desir gives her instructions, but she sometimes judges for herself and creates solutions.

That would be the ESTP trait of excellent quick judgment and wit.

Pram Schneider — ISFJ 6w7

✦ Pram's Type Reasoning

Why ISFJ 6w7

✔ ISFJ: Gets done the work needed now without missing anything
✔ 6w7: Protects together the people and group she has chosen to believe in when they are in danger

Pram reads as ISFJ 6w7. When an enemy goes after Desir in Esteban's raid, Pram steps in front of Desir without hesitation. What she does isn't drawing up Desir's strategy for him or persuading the opponent with words.

She blocks the enemy's attack and buys time for her companions to make their next judgment.

In this scene, Pram's trust shows in action rather than words. The 6w7's loyalty is closer to an attitude of protecting together the people and group she has chosen to believe in when they're in danger, rather than blindly obeying authority.

The ISFJ's sense of responsibility also shows up not as abstract devotion but as getting done the work needed now without missing anything. Desir can set the direction of the whole battle, but can't block every attack himself.

Because Pram holds her post, the other companions can carry on their own roles.

Azest Kingscrown — ISTJ 1w9

✦ Azest's Type Reasoning

Why ISTJ 1w9

Roles and proficiencyCarries out her role as knight commander and ends the contest with trained skill
Her own standardsDoesn't match provocation emotionally or try to win with words

Azest can be seen as ISTJ 1w9. At Evanaten, she faces an Esteban warrior who enjoys fighting head-on and wins with a magic sword.

She doesn't match the opponent's provocation emotionally or try to gain the upper hand with words; she ends the contest with trained skill and judgment.

That the opponent, after admitting defeat, rates Azest as an excellent warrior shows her skill wasn't mere bluster.

The strength Azest adds to the team differs from Desir's persuasiveness and Romantica's on-the-ground sense. She carries out her role as knight commander and delivers results in battle when needed.

The ISTJ 1w9 reading comes from an attitude of valuing roles and proficiency and keeping to her own standards. But she isn't important as a companion only because she follows orders well.

Because she can judge the situation and fight with her own ability, Desir can trust her with a part of the battle without controlling everything himself.

<The Season 2 opening track sets the Evanaten mood just right>
* From the official Aniplex channel.

Can someone who knows the future solve every problem alone? The two crises at Evanaten show he can't.

Desir can read the cause of a problem and give direction, but for that plan to become an actual solution, other people have to add their own abilities and judgment.

The future Desir has to change in this anime isn't made just by using knowledge brought from the future. It starts with gathering companions who fill the parts he can't do alone and moving together.

That's all for this post. See you next time.
