* Spoiler warning: This includes the major setup and events of Seasons 1-3. I recommend watching the anime first!
How would you feel if someone who's better than you with a sword, better at magic, or better at planning strategy became your subordinate? You might become anxious about holding onto your own position because the gap in ability makes you uncomfortable.
But Ars Lovent acts the opposite way. He finds people better than himself and creates positions where they can fully show their abilities.
The reason this work is fun is that the person who grows into a lord isn't the strongest one solving everything, but the one who recognizes people with different strengths and connects them.
What You Need to Know First
✦ Main Characters
Companions gathered in Seasons 1-2
Ars is an ordinary office worker reborn into a weak noble house in another world. He isn't especially good at swordsmanship or strategy, but he was born with the 'Appraisal Skill,' which sees through a person's abilities and potential.
For Ars, who had to take responsibility for his house and territory at a young age, this ability mattered. Instead of judging people by status or looks, he seeks out people who haven't yet had a chance to show their talent and accepts them as companions.
Ritz Muses, his first key companion, had outstanding combat ability and command skill, but was a boy discriminated against for being a Markain. Ars isn't swayed by the prejudice around him and takes Ritz in as a retainer.
Charlotte Race is a bold girl gifted in magic, and Roselle Kisha's strength lies in analyzing situations and drawing up plans rather than fighting with the body.
In Seasons 1 and 2, Ars defends the territory with these companions and even jumps into the Mishian succession war. Through this, it becomes clear that Ars's strength doesn't lie in fighting directly and defeating enemies.
While Ritz holds up the battlefield, Charlotte pressures enemies with magic, and Roselle draws up strategy, Ars gathers people and coordinates so each one's ability is used at the moment it's needed.
Having earned merit in the war, he is appointed in Season 3 as the military commander governing the Canare region.
A Crisis He Can't Solve With His Own Strength
Having become military commander, Ars names Mireille as the new lord of Lamberg. Mireille is a capable strategist who has been helping with operations, but rather than keeping her by his side, Ars decided to send her to a post that needs governing ability.
It shows that recognizing talent isn't about holding that person only at your side, but about finding the place where their ability will be put to best use.
Right after that decision, the army of Saits province, allied with Basamak, attacks Canare and the situation changes abruptly. The Canare army, badly outnumbered, can't hold on through Ars's personal courage alone.
What's needed now isn't proving who is stronger, but the question of how to combine the forces they have with their companions' abilities.
The Canare army finally wins through a large-scale magic operation, but the enemy's follow-up attacks continue. Instead of overpowering the enemy head-on, Roselle devises a plan to break the enemy's morale and analyzes the battle situation.
Charlotte lends her magic to that plan, and Musha, facing the first sortie, shows a wish to play a role in the war too. Looking at Musha's choice to go to the front trusting Charlotte, you can see that finding talented people isn't enough.
The process of leading that person to overcome fear and actually use their ability is needed too.
Then the enemy's second attack forces the Canare army to fall back. To block the pursuit, an elite unit led by Braham takes the rear guard, and Braham and Jat confront their own pasts and choices in the dangerous mission.
Having lost its camp and provisions during the retreat, the Canare army is in a position where it must counterattack before the enemy's supply stabilizes.
Ars entrusts Pamu's mercenary band Shadow with an operation to seize magic water by using the enemy's underground storehouse, and here victory can't be won by any one person's ability alone.
The person who gathers information, the person who infiltrates, the person who handles ranged attacks, and the person who shines on the battlefield have to connect each other's roles to turn the tide.
Ars Lovent — ENFJ 2w1
Ars reads as ENFJ 2w1. He doesn't gather people by looking only at the abilities in front of him.
Even when Ritz was being discriminated against because of origin, and even when Charlotte's rough attitude was a burden to others, Ars looked at both what they could actually accomplish and what opportunities they hadn't been given.
The ENFJ's initiative shows in how he doesn't stop at interest in people but turns it into the action of actually recruiting them.
His way of not turning away from people in need and responsibly setting up a place where their talent can contribute to the community connects with the 2w1 reading.
✦ How Ars Placed Talent
Not at his side, but where the ability is needed
Sending Mireille to be the new lord of Lamberg and entrusting Pamu with the mission of shaking the enemy's supply lines follow the same line. Ars doesn't think keeping the excellent people at his side is the best option.
Rather than trying to control everything himself, he shares authority and responsibility with the right person for the job.
He lacks the ability to dominate combat directly, but he's a character whose leadership shows in admitting his own shortcomings and bringing out others' strengths.
Ritz Muses — ISTJ 6w5
✦ Ritz's Type Reasoning
Why ISTJ 6w5
Ritz looks like ISTJ 6w5. He's a character who doesn't take missions lightly and supports companions with abilities built through training and real combat.
Ritz isn't just a strong swordsman but has the ability to judge what to do to turn the tide when danger comes. Securing the large catalyst and magic water during the Canare army's retreat is an example.
He knows that protecting the equipment and supplies essential to the force, rather than recklessly confronting the enemy, is also a battlefield responsibility.
The 6w5 side shows in an attitude of staying wary of danger and valuing trustworthy people and systems. Ritz doesn't follow Ars out of blind obedience.
It's because Ars recognized Ritz, who had been discriminated against for background, as someone with potential, and because that trust built up in real actions while fighting together. Ritz trusts Ars's judgment and carries out the role superbly.
If Ars has the eye to recognize people, Ritz completes the assigned work so that the trust turns into actual results.
Charlotte Race — ESTP 8w7
✦ Charlotte's Type Reasoning
Why ESTP 8w7
Charlotte can be seen as ESTP 8w7. Rather than analyzing a complex situation only at a desk, her strength is in carrying out the needed action right in front of her and changing the course of the battle.
The scenes of the large-scale magic operation and attacking the enemy fortress in coordination with Shin's flying device show not only Charlotte's excellent magic ability but also excellent judgment.
The 8w7's boldness shows in the attitude of not backing down before a threat and trying to change the situation with her own power. Of course, Charlotte doesn't solve every problem alone.
Roselle draws up the plan, Shin creates the opening to attack, and Charlotte has to land the blow with magic.
Thinking of the scene where Musha goes on a first sortie trusting Charlotte, Charlotte is less a person who acts alone with great ability than a companion who works with others and gives them courage.
Roselle Kisha — INTP 5w6
✦ Roselle's Strategist Thinking
Why INTP 5w6
Roselle is INTP 5w6. Roselle is strong at gathering information, grasping the structure of a situation, and finding efficient solutions rather than overpowering enemies with force.
The strategy Roselle puts forward isn't just gathering a force stronger than the enemy's but an attempt to overturn the gap in strength in another way.
Examining the enemy's supply situation and judging that a counterattack is needed before the enemy recovers its strength is like that.
Roselle isn't a staff officer who moves after a fight starts but a strategist who calculates in advance what the enemy could do next. As you know, there are many geniuses among INTPs.
The 5w6 side shows in 'an attitude of securing enough information and finding ways to reduce risk and prepare.'
For Roselle's analysis to have power in actual battle, attack forces like Charlotte, infiltration forces like Pamu, and on-site command like Ritz have to move together.
Ars doesn't demand that Roselle do everything alone; he connects other people's strengths so the plan Roselle drew up can be carried out.
Ars looks like a capable lord not because he has every ability himself.
The choices that make Ars grow are sending Mireille to the post governing needs, entrusting Pamu with the mission of shaking supply, and connecting the different strengths of Ritz, Charlotte, and Roselle into a single operation.
Watching the Appraisal Skill that recognizes people's abilities, and the power to build a stage where people can trust those abilities and cooperate with each other: that's the charm of this work.
That's all for this post. See you next time.
