Reincarnated as a Sword Season 2: MBTI & Enneagram Analysis

Fran, a black cat tribe girl, holding her talking sword with a floating island in the sky

Looking only at the fact that a sword is in a girl's hands, it's easy to assume Fran is the owner and Teacher is the weapon. But in this story, Teacher isn't a tool waiting for Fran's orders.

He judges danger with his own mind, points out what Fran missed, and sometimes moves before she does. Fran doesn't just follow the path Teacher sets for her, either.

✦ Main Characters

Fran, Teacher and the people around them

FranBlack Cat Tribe girl and adventurer
Freed from slavery by a sword that thinks and moves on its own. Now keeps adventuring to bring about her tribe's Evolution.
TeacherA sword reincarnated from the modern world
Talks and thinks, moves by telekinesis, and learns new skills by absorbing monsters' Magic Stones.
UrushiA wolf monster who follows Fran
Jean du VixA male necromancer studying the Floating Island Dungeon
Fran and Teacher enter the dungeon this season on his request.

When Jean du Vix starts to explain the dungeon at length, Teacher tries to cut it short because he worries Fran will get bored. Fran fires back that she's a D-rank adventurer now and can sit through a long explanation.

Teacher apologizes for treating her like a little kid, but Fran ends up falling asleep halfway through. A Teacher who looks after her like a guardian and a Fran who wants to be treated as an adult. And yet Fran is the one gripping Teacher and swinging him.

Strange relationship, right?

Fran: ISTP 8w9

✦ ISTP 8w9 at a Glance

Fran's type in short

ISTP 8w9
• Acts on what she's checked herself instead of explaining at length
• Refuses a life that others decide for her
• Calm, but pushes her goal through to the end

Fran is quicker with action than with words. On her way to Port Dars, when she spots the Floating Island, she says that even back when she was a slave, gazing at the island floating in the sky was her only joy.

Now she doesn't have to wait for anyone's permission; she can go there on her own two feet. Fran approaches the Floating Island without hesitation, and even after the Skeleton Knight's attack sends her plunging down, she vows she'll definitely win next time.

A place she used to only look at, she now explores herself, and she means to challenge the opponent who blocked her again.

That fits ISTP. Rather than explain her goals at length, Fran sizes up what's in front of her and moves.

When she approaches the Floating Island, she uses Urushi's magic power and Teacher's telekinesis to find a way in, and in battle she watches her opponent's movements to find an opening.

Noticing that the Skeleton Knight guards its head so much and guessing the Magic Stone is there also shows that Fran doesn't miss the fine details of a fight. She isn't simply pushing through with brute strength.

She's someone who decides her next move from information she's checked for herself.

✦ Where the 8w9 Shows

Deciding her own life

Her past
As a slave, she had no freedom to choose where to go or who to be with
Her now
An adventurer chasing her own goals, who won't let others decide for her
Her temperament
Quiet and calm, but stubborn about what she wants and who she treasures

On the Enneagram, 8w9 shows in Fran's drive to decide her own life. As a former slave, Fran had no freedom to choose where to go or who to be with. But after meeting Teacher, she became an adventurer, and now she's chasing her own goals herself.

She doesn't go along when someone tries to decide for her, and she even faces strong opponents head-on. What Fran wants isn't a reputation for being strong; it's to reach the goal she wants to achieve.

She doesn't say much and stays calm, but she won't back down on what she wants or on the companions she treasures.

Probably the 9 wing's calm showing up alongside the 8's strong will.

Teacher: INTP 5w6

✦ INTP 5w6 at a Glance

Teacher's type in short

✔ INTP: Collects skills rather than relying on force, and thinks about when to use them and how to combine them
✔ 5w6: Builds knowledge out of curiosity, prepares ahead before Fran is in danger, and looks for a way out first

Teacher's INTP 5w6 side shows in how he gathers abilities and works out how to use them. He doesn't just stockpile the skills he gets from absorbing Magic Stones; he checks what situations they're good for and tests combinations of different abilities.

When Fran spots the Skeleton Knight guarding its head so much, Teacher uses that clue to estimate where the Magic Stone is. Rather than fighting on force alone, he figures out an opponent's weak points and thinks about how to link his allies' skills together.

✦ Teacher Plays It Safe

What his caution looks like in a fight

1Prepare ahead
So Fran isn't put in danger
2Strengthen defense
Builds up his own defensive skills
3Check the exit
Looks for an escape route first when a fight turns bad
4Hear Fran out
Fran says they're the strongest combo and won't run, and Teacher accepts

On the Enneagram, the 5's curiosity comes with the caution of the 6 wing. Teacher prepares ahead so Fran isn't put in danger, strengthens his own defensive skills, and when a fight turns against them, he even looks for a way out first.

Even against a strong enemy, he checks the escape routes first so he can pull Fran out of the fight if it comes to that. But Fran says the two of them are the strongest combo and that she'd rather fight together than run.

Teacher hears that and accepts Fran's choice. In other words, Teacher doesn't try to protect Fran one-sidedly or force his own ideas on her; he treats her as a companion fighting alongside him.

He keeps building up knowledge and skills partly out of intense curiosity, but also to gain the power to protect the companions he treasures.

What Adventures Await the Two of Them?

✦ Two Reactions After the Battle

Teacher worries, Fran celebrates

Enneagram 6Teacher
Worries about Fran's condition
Enneagram 8Fran
Delighted that their finishing move worked

After the fight with the Skeleton Knight, Teacher worries about Fran's condition, but Fran is delighted that they pulled off the finishing move the two made together.

So while Teacher, with his Enneagram 6 tendencies, is busy worrying, Fran, with her 8 tendencies, first looks back on what the challenge accomplished.

A sword that talks is a pretty unusual premise. And if you're curious about the adventures of two people with different dispositions, give this anime a watch. I think you'll enjoy it.
