Dragon Ball Super: Beerus MBTI, Why We Can't Hate Him

Anime-style illustration of Beerus, a purple-skinned cat-like God of Destruction with golden eyes, arms crossed, side-glancing at a glowing pudding bowl against a cosmic backdrop

How can a god who destroys worlds be so hard to hate?

Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, is a being who blows up planets when he's in a bad mood. Yet fans don't hate him. They love him. That charm is just as strong in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, which returns in 2026 as an ENHANCED Edition.

What Kind of God Is Beerus, the God of Destruction?

✦ Beerus at a Glance

God of Destruction of Universe 7

First appearance2013 film Battle of Gods
LookCat-like
PersonalityWhimsical, weak for food
By his sideWhis, attendant and martial arts master
Official roleKeeping the universe in balance

Beerus first appeared in the 2013 theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. He looks like a cat, and he keeps Whis, his attendant and martial arts master, by his side.

He naps for decades at a time, goes weak in front of tasty food, and is whimsical enough to wipe out a planet when his mood turns.

On the surface he looks like he enjoys destruction, but a God of Destruction's official role is to keep the universe in balance. Still, Beerus is someone who sometimes destroys things out of personal feelings and whims.

In other words, there are times he breaks things because he's angry, not because it's his duty.

This gray area is what makes Beerus a character rather than a villain.

Beerus's MBTI Is ESTP

One note: the MBTI here is not an official setting but a classification decided by fan votes.

✦ Beerus's Personality Type

Fan-vote classification

MBTI
ESTP (150 votes)
Enneagram
8w7 (70 votes)
In one line
Impulsive, present-focused, decides by logic

On the Personality Database (PDB), Beerus is classified as ESTP with 150 votes (as of October 15, 2026). His Enneagram came out as 8w7 (70 votes). The 8w7 is a challenging, assertive type.

That is why Beerus acts on his own mood without caring what others think. ESTP stands for Extraversion, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving. It is an impulsive, present-focused type that decides by logic.

His behavior fits perfectly. He suddenly falls asleep, licks his paws, and loses his head over delicious food like a cat. Then, when his mood sours, he explodes in an instant.

The comic timing that swings between majesty and clumsiness is what makes people laugh.

He has a tsundere side too: gruff, yet quietly looking after Goku and Vegeta. The one mainly in charge of training the two is Whis, but Beerus also helps out in a crisis.

Beerus vs. Goku: Same Freedom, Different Temperature

✦ Beerus vs. Goku

Same freedom, different temperature

Beerus (ESTP)
• Judges by: strength and logic
• Drive: fun
• Temperature: like ice
Goku (ESFP)
• Judges by: comrades and heart
• Drive: fun
• Temperature: like fire

Goku is ESFP. On PDB, ESFP received 1,194 of the 1,529 total Four Letter votes (as of October 15, 2026). Some say ENFP, but in the votes ESFP is overwhelming.

The two have a lot in common. Both are extraverted, impulsive, and free in how they enjoy the present. But the way they judge differs.

In MBTI, T is a preference for relatively weighing objective principles and logical consequences when making decisions, and F is a preference for relatively weighing the impact on people and values.

Beerus's emphasis on objective standards and Goku's emphasis on his comrades and heart each stand out.

When Beerus sizes someone up, his standards are strength and logic. When Goku moves, his standards are his comrades and heart. It is the same freedom, yet one is like ice and the other like fire. Both also share the fact that fun is what drives them.

If it's not fun, Beerus goes to sleep and Goku looks for the next fight.

Beerus vs. Vegeta: Same Strength, Different Method

✦ Beerus vs. Vegeta

Same strength, different method

MBTIESTP vs. ESTJ
MethodMoves on mood vs. trains by plan
DriveFun vs. pride
ImageWind vs. rock

Vegeta is ESTJ. On PDB, ESTJ got the most votes with 628 (as of October 15, 2026). Some outlets also say ENTJ, ISTP, or INTJ.

Both prize strength, but their methods are polar opposites. In MBTI, J is a tendency to relatively prefer reaching conclusions and organizing things, and P is a tendency to relatively prefer keeping options open and exploring new information.

Beerus moves on whatever mood he's in, and naps for decades before exploding. Vegeta makes a plan and trains his body according to it. In fan interpretation, Beerus's impulsive side can be seen as P, and Vegeta's disciplined training as J.

That said, this contrast is an interpretation of the characters' behavior, not a claim that a type necessarily produces behavior.

Beerus's drive is fun. If it's fun he moves, and if not he sleeps. Vegeta's drive is pride. His pride in wanting to beat Goku keeps him training. Vegeta moves on pride, not fun. So even when it isn't fun, he won't stop training because of his pride.

Same strength, but one is like wind and the other like rock.

Why Did Toriyama Make a God of Destruction a Cat?

✦ How the Design Changed

Toriyama's choice

1Original design
An evil, dark character
2Toriyama's reference
A cat his family kept
3The finished Beerus
A scary yet cute tightrope walk

Akira Toriyama has said in an interview that the God of Destruction design he was originally given was an evil, dark character. But Toriyama designed him with reference to a cat his family kept.

So, unlike what the name God of Destruction suggests, he became a character in whom fear and cuteness remain together rather than darkness. The fear stayed. Beerus can still wipe out a planet. That tightrope walk of scary yet cute is Beerus's identity.

This design created all of Beerus's appeal. He is not a cruel god who enjoys destruction, but a god who is whimsical like a cat and weak for food. That contradiction of being scary yet cute is what pulls fans in.

Three Faces of Strength

✦ Three Faces of Strength

Comparing the three

✔ Beerus: Freedom and logic
✔ Goku: Freedom and warmth
✔ Vegeta: Discipline and pride

Beerus's strength is freedom and logic. Goku's strength is freedom and warmth, and Vegeta's strength is discipline and pride.

All three center on the present and on action, but each is strong for a different reason. That's why the story gets fun whenever the three collide. Scenes where Beerus is dumbfounded by Goku's innocence and scoffs at Vegeta's pride are funny for that reason.

The reason a god who enjoys destruction isn't hated is that he's not a villain. A god who destroys as part of his duty, acts like a cat, and quietly looks after people. With a god like that, you'd keep watching just to see what he'll break next, wouldn't you?

That's all for this post. See you next time.
