The Village He Trusted Hid the Truth First
✦ Who's Who
The people of Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Growing up in Higashimura, Yuru took the village's way of life and rules for granted. He hunted in the mountains, got along with the villagers, and thought of Right and Left as Higashimura's guardian deity.
He also believed that Asa, who lived in a room deep inside the village, was the little sister he had to protect.
He never doubted the story that his parents had left him and Asa behind together, either. Protecting Asa was a big part of why he lived the way he did in Higashimura.
Yuru comes back to the village with a bird he hunted and goes to see Asa. As they talk about the day's hunt, he says that if he brings in prized meat and helps the village, he won't need to go work in the outside world.
He also promises to stay by Asa's side and keep protecting her.
To Yuru, Higashimura was a familiar, safe place, and Asa was the little sister he was responsible for inside it.
But that calm collapses when attackers with helicopters and guns show up. The barrier is breached and the villagers come under attack, and Yuru ends up facing enemies with weapons nothing like the world he knew.
✦ Two Terms to Know
Go-between and Daemons
That's when Dera finds a way to get Yuru out, and tells him how to wake Right and Left, the guardian deity of Higashimura.
Yuru had to move without getting a full explanation from Dera. They weren't old friends, but given what was happening and after seeing how Dera acted, Yuru decides to follow his guidance.
✦ How Yuru Handled Right and Left
Borrowing great power without giving up his own call
Yuru wakes Right and Left as Dera says. That doesn't mean he trusts this new presence blindly.
When the awakened Right and Left treat him as their master and ask for orders, Yuru says that it would be overstepping for him to give orders to the guardian deity of Higashimura, and asks a favor instead.
The favor was to carry the villagers who might still be alive to safety, and to leave Gabu-chan, the enemy right in front of him, to him alone. Right and Left go off to save the villagers, and Yuru takes up his bow to face the attacker himself.
He borrows great power, but he decides his own share of the fight himself. That's Yuru's way.
Yuru: ISTP 6w5
Yuru's MBTI can be read as ISTP. When he hunts, he reads the terrain and the prey's movements and picks the moment when his bow will work best.
Hitting Gabu-chan's leg and shoulder with arrows to limit her movement shows the same thing: a hunter's sense for reading the fight and aiming exactly where it counts. He looks at the conditions in front of him and puts his skills to work right away.
Plenty of ISTPs are good with their hands and physically gifted, too.
✦ Type Snapshot
Yuru at a glance
For the Enneagram, 6w5 fits. When danger comes, Yuru checks what's threatening him and the people around him, and tries to work out whose word he can trust.
He doesn't turn down help from Dera and Hana, even though he isn't close to them, but he doesn't accept their explanations as truth easily. Instead he asks Right and Left directly, and tries to make sense of the situation from what he has heard.
It's the 6's need for safety and trust, plus the 5 wing's habit of checking information and judging independently.
✦ How Yuru Sizes Up a Stranger
What he checks instead of kind words
When Yuru meets a stranger, he doesn't decide whom to trust based on kind words. How does this person actually help him? How much do they really know? He goes through what he can check himself, one thing at a time.
That's why he takes Dera and Hana's hands when he needs to, yet tries to make the calls about his own past and family himself. He picks a partner to cooperate with in a crisis, but never hands over the final say on his own life.
That's how Yuru teams up with strangers.
What Awaits Yuru in the Outside World?
While fighting in the village, Yuru meets a 'woman in an eyepatch' and learns a secret about his little sister.
The identity of the person he thought was family is turned upside down, and even the family history he was told in the village turns out to be false.
Then it comes out that the attackers are after Yuru, and he decides to leave the village. If he stays, the villagers could be attacked again. Dera knew an escape route, and Hana joins the two of them at the foot of the mountain.
Yuru gets out of Higashimura with the two of them.
✦ Yuru's Road Out of Higashimura
From the village to the truth about his parents
After coming down the mountain, Yuru gets his first taste of modern life at a rest stop. He looks over the packaging of the convenience store rice ball Hana hands him, accepts unfamiliar clothes and shoes, and learns a new way of living.
Whenever he runs into something he doesn't know, he listens to an explanation and tries it himself to learn how to use it.
He doesn't back away just because it's different from the world he grew up in, and starts handling what needs doing right now, one thing at a time.
Learning that the adults of Higashimura hid important facts about him and Asa, Yuru asks Right and Left directly about his and Asa's past.
Right and Left had watched over the village from its entrance for a long time, but didn't know everything that happened inside.
Still, they remembered his parents leaving the village with a little girl who smelled of the same blood as Yuru. Hearing that, Yuru learns that his parents took Asa and left, and that only he was left behind in Higashimura.
So what situation will Yuru face in the outside world? If you're curious, I recommend watching this anime! I think you'll enjoy it.
That's all for this post. See you next time.
